Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Andy LaRoche and infielder Delwyn Young have become free agents after clearing waivers. The Pirates removed both players from their 40-man roster when they were designated for assignment on Nov. 19. LaRoche was the starting third baseman in 2009, but lost his job while hitting .206 with four homers and 16 RBIs last season.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded left-hander Zach Duke to the Arizona Diamondbacks for a player to be named. After designating Duke for assignment on Friday, the Pirates had 10 days to trade or release him. Duke was 8-15 with a 5.72 ERA in 29 starts last season. He has allowed 443 hits over the last two seasons, the sixth most in the majors.

Former Phillies manager Nick Leyva has joined the Pirates' staff as new manager Clint Hurdle's third base coach. Leyva was the Blue Jays' bench coach last season after spending two seasons as the third base coach. He will also coach the infielders. Pitching coach Ray Searage and bench coach Jeff Banister were retained from former manager John Russell's staff.
