Left-hander Joe Beimel and the Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to a minor league contract. Beimel would get a $1.75 million, one-year deal if added to the Pirates' 40-man roster under Friday's agreement The reliever was 1-2 with a 3.40 ERA in 71 games with Colorado last season, his second year in a row with at least 70 appearances and his fifth consecutive season with 60 or more.

If you're old enough, you may remember the great Cincinnati Reds teams of the 1970s. Led by the likes of Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench, Tony Perez and Pete Rose, The Big Red Machine made four trips to the World Series ('70, '72, '75, '76) and fell short in two other seasons in which they made the NLCS (73, 79). With so many playoff appearances in a short period of time, it must have been easy for Reds fans to take those special years for granted.

The 2010 season didn't exactly treat the Baltimore Orioles kindly. After a miserable start that saw them go 32-73, the Orioles hired Buck Showalter as their coach, and he turned things around at the end of the year, posting a record of 34-23 under his watch. This season the Orioles have a much improved infield and a bit more depth in the bullpen. The additions of Mark Reynolds at third base, JJ Hardy at shortstop, and Derrek Lee at first give them some much needed pop in their lineup.

Overview Spring is a short couple of months around the corner, which means that baseball is almost ready to revisit us. To many people the day that pitchers and catchers arrive is the day that spring starts. This is why baseball is an American pastime. That said, we will be visiting the New York Yankees spring training program and schedule for the 2011 season. Why the New York Yankees? They are my favorite team because of the legacy that they have forged not only in baseball, but in America.
